What is astrocartography?
Astrocartography — the astrology of places — projects your birth chart onto a world map: your personal astrocartography map. The technique was popularised by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s. For each planet, the map shows where it was rising, setting, culminating overhead or at the lowest point beneath you at your birth. Living or travelling near a planet's line is said to bring its themes to the foreground.
The four types of lines
| Line | Angle | Brings the planet into… |
|---|---|---|
| AC line | Ascendant (rising) | Your personality, body, how others see you |
| DC line | Descendant (setting) | Relationships and partners |
| MC line | Midheaven | Career, reputation, public life |
| IC line | Imum Coeli | Home, family, roots |
What each planet line means
| Planet | Themes on the line |
|---|---|
| ☉ Sun | Visibility, confidence, recognition |
| ☽ Moon | Belonging, emotions, family, public popularity |
| ☿ Mercury | Learning, writing, networking, trade |
| ♀ Venus | Romance, beauty, pleasure, social ease |
| ♂ Mars | Drive, courage, competition — also conflict |
| ♃ Jupiter | Luck, growth, generosity, opportunity |
| ♄ Saturn | Hard work, structure, lessons, long-term building |
| ♅ Uranus | Change, freedom, the unexpected |
| ♆ Neptune | Spirituality, creativity, dreams — and confusion |
| ♇ Pluto | Transformation, power, intensity |
Best place to live: astrology and relocation
Looking for the best place to live? Astrology answers it in two steps: your planetary lines first, then the relocation chart for each city on your shortlist.
When people ask “where should I live, astrology-wise?”, astrologers usually look for supportive Venus and Jupiter lines (and sometimes Sun or Moon lines), then check the relocation chart — your birth chart recast for the new city — to see which houses your planets move into. Lines have an orb of influence of a few hundred miles, so you don't need to live exactly on one.
- For love: Venus DC or Venus AC lines.
- For career: Sun MC or Jupiter MC lines.
- For home and family: Moon IC or Venus IC lines.
- For a reset: Uranus lines — exciting but unpredictable.
Astrocartography for travel
Astrology travel planning uses the same map for shorter stays: a Jupiter-line holiday for luck, a Venus-line trip for romance, a Mercury-line city for study. Pair it with your solar return to choose where to spend your birthday.
What an astrocartography reading includes
A full astro map reading usually covers:
- Your astro map with every planetary line.
- An interpretation of the cities you're considering.
- Relocation chart analysis for your top choices.
- Timing: current transits to those lines.
Ask an astrologer on PsychicBook to read your astro map — bring your birth data and a shortlist of places.
