What is an astrology reading?
An astrology reading is a one-to-one session in which an astrologer interprets your birth chart — a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the exact moment and place you were born. From that map, a skilled astrologer describes your temperament, strengths and recurring patterns, and connects them to the questions you bring: relationships, work, timing, moving, or simply understanding yourself better.
Whether you call it a reading or an astrology consultation, a good personal astrology reading is a conversation, not a script. You'll get the most from it when you arrive with two or three focused questions — see our list of questions to ask an astrologer.
Types of astrology readings
| Reading | Best for | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Birth chart (natal) reading | A first, complete overview of you | Birth chart reading |
| Love & compatibility (synastry) | Couples, dating, “is this the one?” | Compatibility reading |
| Career & money | Job changes, business timing | Career astrology |
| Forecast / solar return | The year ahead, big transits | Forecast reading |
| Vedic (Jyotish) | Sidereal zodiac, dashas, kundli | Vedic reading |
| Chinese astrology / BaZi | Animal sign, elements, four pillars | Chinese astrology |
| Astrocartography | Where to live, travel or relocate | Astrocartography |
Online astrology reading vs. an astrologer near me
Searching for an astrology reading near me usually turns up a handful of local practitioners with limited availability. An online astrology reading uses exactly the same chart — your birth data doesn't change with your location — but gives you a far wider choice of specialists, transparent reviews and the ability to start within minutes.
- Choice: filter by Western, Vedic or Chinese astrology, or by topic such as love or career.
- Speed: live astrology readings are available around the clock, across time zones.
- Privacy: chat sessions let you share as much or as little as you like.
- Price control: per-minute billing means you decide how long the session lasts.
Chat, phone or live video?
An astrology reading by chat is the most popular format online: you can paste your birth details, re-read the astrologer's answers later and take your time with follow-up questions. An astrology reading by phone feels more conversational, while video suits people who like face-to-face sessions. An astrology consultation online works in any of these formats. Our #1 platform, PsychicBook, focuses on astrology reading chat sessions — secure live chat on the web and in its iOS and Android apps.
How to get an astrology reading online
- Collect your birth data — date, exact time (check your birth certificate) and city of birth.
- Choose a platform — we recommend PsychicBook's astrology section; new users get 50% off the first session plus 10 free minutes.
- Pick an astrologer — read the profile, specialisation and reviews, and compare per-minute rates.
- Start with one clear question — then let the conversation open up.
- Save the transcript and revisit it when the timing the astrologer mentioned comes around.
What a professional astrology reading covers
A professional astrology reading typically starts with your “big three” — Sun, Moon and rising sign — then moves to the houses and planets most relevant to your question. Many astrologers add current transits to show what's active now and what's coming. In-depth readings may also look at your progressions, solar return or relocation chart.
If you don't know your birth time, say so up front. A good astrologer will work with planetary positions and aspects rather than guessing your rising sign.
How we choose the best astrology reading sites
We score platforms on astrologer verification, depth of astrology specialisations, price transparency, privacy and the value of a first session. That's why PsychicBook sits at #1 across our guides. See the full ranking on our home page or read the PsychicBook review.
Frequently asked questions
How much is an astrology reading online?
Most online astrologers charge per minute, and rates vary with experience. See our astrology reading cost guide for typical ranges and ways to pay less.
Are online astrology readings accurate?
The chart used online is the same as in person. Treat any reading as guidance for reflection rather than a fixed forecast; readings are offered for entertainment purposes.
What information do I need for an astrology reading?
Your date, exact time and place of birth. The time sets your rising sign and houses, so it matters most for detailed readings.
Can I get a free astrology reading?
Yes — new PsychicBook users receive 10 free minutes plus 50% off the first session. More options on our free astrology reading page.
How long should an astrology reading last?
A focused question can be answered in 10–20 minutes; a full birth chart reading usually takes 45–60 minutes.
